Griya Faria, Ubud’s Rocking Reggae Band
When I arrived at the Lobong Cafe, the place was packed. I was about ready to turn around and go back home, when one of the waiters came up and asked me if I would like a seat. Seeing no places available, he assured me he could find me a seat if I didn’t mind sharing a table.
I decided to stay, while he checked with a couple that was sitting at a table close to the band. I could see their nods of agreement, and he motioned for me to come on over. It was another one of those great decisions I had made on my trip! Griya Faria was onstage, and from the moment they began their show until the very last note was drawn out of them by a very eager and demanding crowd, I was hooked. |
The music was great, but the singer was extraordinary.
The band went through some of the more familiar Bob Marley songs, ones even I knew, and many more I was unfamiliar with. At one point they played a Michael Jackson song in tribute to his passing, with the crowd joining in and singing along.
By the end of the evening the place was rocking, with half the crowd dancing away to the rhythmic beat of the music and the incredible voice that was dominating the stage.
If you are planning a trip to Bali, you must visit Ubud if for no other reason than to catch a performance by Griya Faria.

Whether you are a Reggae fan or not, if you have a pulse, you will be driven to respond to the driving force called Griya Faria. Be sure and plan your stay in Ubud on a Tuesday, Friday, or Sunday, so as not to miss the opportunity to be inspired by their music and performance.
My only disappointment was that I was not able to find a CD of their music in town at any of the local music stores. I even went back to the Lobong Cafe to check with them, with no luck. I would have loved to have brought home the music and spirit of Griya Faria. |
